About Thomas Baumgarten
Thomas E. Baumgarten, MD, is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery of the bones and joints. His practice is focused on knee, shoulder and elbow injuries or problems, including anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, meniscus and cartilage issues, arthritis, rotator cuff repair, tendon tears, labral tears, SLAP injuries, and instability or dislocations. Some problems can heal without surgery and Dr. Baumgarten has a trusted network of physical therapists, athletic trainers and other healthcare professionals to help if in those cases. Should surgery be required, Dr. Baumgarten uses the latest arthroscopic techniques to achieve the best result possible. Dr. Baumgarten attended the University of Louisville Medical School and completed his orthopedic surgery residency in Greenville, SC. He completed a sports medicine fellowship with James Andrews, MD, at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, AL with Frank McCue, MD, at the University of Virginia. He is board-certified in orthopedic surgery with a certificate of added qualification in sports medicine. Dr. Baumgarten is team physician for Furman University. Throughout his career he has cared for athletes at all levels from amateur to professional, working with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, Greenville Triumph SC, Greenville Griffins, Bob Jones University, Carolina Elite Soccer Academy, Greenville Rhinos, and many area high schools, clubs and organizations. He helped lead and develop the sports medicine programs for both the Greenville Health System and Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital.
